What is “GMRS”?
• GMRS: “General Mobile Radio Service”
• GMRS was chosen based on the availability of low-cost radios and requires a “no test” license. The license is $35, good for 10 years and any family member can use the radio.
• For enhanced neighborhood effectiveness, use of GMRS is supported by the Pierce County Dept of Emergency Management(DEM) and the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES).
• For Anderson Island, each Zone has a dedicated GMRS channel enabling Neighborhood Coordinators to communicate their needs with their Zone leads.
• Zone Leads can then pass emergency traffic to the Fire Station radio operators using the island wide channel.
• The Fire Station will provide local situation updates and instructions using the island wide GMRS channel.
• Radio training and support will be provided on island by members of the GMRS communication team.
• We’ve standardized on the radio make, model and developed a custom radio configuration for Anderson Island to simplify the operation of the radio.
See the “Introduction to GMRS” video under the video tab for more information.
